What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using height and weight to estimate body fat. The formula is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared (kg/m²), or 703 × pounds ÷ inches² in imperial units. Adult BMI categories are: underweight (below 18.5), healthy weight (18.5–24.9), overweight (25–29.9) and obese (30 or above). Because BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, treat it as a quick screening number rather than a diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. It's calculated as weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared.
Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared: BMI = kg / m². For example, 70 kg at 1.75 m gives 70 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9. In imperial units, use BMI = 703 × weight (lbs) / height (in)².
Convert your height from centimetres to metres (divide by 100), square it, then divide your weight in kg by that number. A person who is 165 cm and 60 kg has a BMI of 60 / (1.65 × 1.65) = 22.0.
A healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is considered obese.
The WHO suggests lower cut-offs for many Asian populations because health risks rise at a lower BMI. A BMI of 23 or above is often treated as overweight and 27.5 or above as obese.
BMI is a general screening indicator. It may not be accurate for athletes, older adults, pregnant women, or people with high muscle mass, because it does not distinguish muscle from fat. Consult a doctor for personalized advice.
